There is endless endless endless talk on Kos concerning the MSM and the right-wing message these corporations push. But there is never talk of action...
Americans, I am appealing to you. What I am going to say may appear impossible, absurd, unwarranted. But it has to be said.
I want you to stop watching TV news. Stop watching CNN, stop watching Fox, stop watching them. Stop. Starting today. I know they broadcast 24/7 and it's difficult, that the fingers seem to operate the remote control with a will of their own. But please try. Stop giving these corporations your ratings, stop giving them your attention, stop giving advertisers your brain every five minutes to pitch products into. Giant egos such as Chris Matthews, Tim Russert, etc, they can be brought back to earth. But people have to stop watching.
There are three films that may help advance my argument/facilitate a readjustment. Firstly, the paranoid sci-fi movie They Live

This gives the basic background on corporations and mind control. Not the conspiratorial mind control of Men in Black and weird radiation. Just the straight-up, everyday kind, the squeezing out of dissent, radical opinion (unless it's a right wing or religious nut, or even better, a right wing religious nut), and, of course, any message that stands in the way of corporate profit.
Secondly, the 1976 film Network starring William Holden and Faye Dunaway was so far ahead of its time. If you haven't watched it, watch it. A wicked satire on the quest for ratings and controversy that is always circumscribed by the demands of stockholders.

Thirdly, of course, Wag the Dog. The business of lying demystified for an hour or more in the company of Dustin Hoffman and Robert de Niro.

After completing these assignments, to stay in touch with the latest lies, but to not be feeding the monster quite so compliantly, all that's required is a subscription to mediamatters.org or similar, to keep pace with the newest lies (without having to sit through them), and a wander through Kos, Think Progress, Alternet, TPM, etc, each day.
The media balance is tilting towards sites such as Kos, but we can help it on its way by draining TV of its audience. And to do this, we need to start with ourselves.
If I can manage this, and I have, then anyone can. Good luck, citizens.
